ON MONDAY APRIL 16TH, FIFTEEN LAURIERS PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED
DURING THIS FIRST EDITION HOSTED BY CHRISTIAN BEGIN
Montreal, March 13, 2018 – The Lauriers proceeded this morning with the official unveiling of the 90 finalists in 15 categories of the first edition of its gala, aimed at recognizing the talents of Quebec’s gastronomy. Starting today, all industry professionals are called upon to vote for the winners of this first edition who will be crowned on April 16th during the evening gala, hosted by none other than Christian Bégin at Salon 1861, in Montreal.
“The idea is to say BRAVO and THANK YOU to the industry by organizing an evening worthy of the greatest cultural galas. We will eat well, we will drink well… We will have fun!” declares Christine Plante, the event’s general manager and founder.
The finalists’ selection
The Lauriers prizes are awarded BY and FOR the industry. The finalists were therefore elected by the “Lauriers Brigade”, which brings together nearly 1,000 professionals from all trades of Quebec’s gastronomy: chefs, restaurant owners, waiters, sommeliers, mixologists, producers, artisans, media, and more. “We have gathered an impressive number of people from all over Quebec to truly hear the voice of the industry,” said Christine Plante.
A jury chaired by chef Stéphane Modat
The vote of the jury–composed of six people whose names will be kept secret until April 16th–will be added to that of the Brigade. The jury members have agreed to withdraw from the competition this year. For the Gala’s first edition, the Lauriers called upon Quebec’s Fairmount Le Château Frontenac’s chef, Stéphane Modat, to chair the jury. “C’est un plaisir pour moi de prendre part à cette belle initiative. C’est l’occasion de mettre en lumière beaucoup de talents qui s’ajoutent à ceux qu’on connaît déjà, et ça ne peut que rejaillir sur la santé de notre industrie.” adds Stéphane Modat.
The entire voting process is led by the external research firm MBA Research, which guarantees the results’ accuracy.
The People’s Choice Lauriers
Following the survey organized by the Lauriers and the research firm MBA, ten personalities were chosen by the public. From March 17 to March 31, in the Gourmand section of La Presse+, the public will be asked to vote by voting for the personality that has marked the gastronomic scene in Quebec this year. This vote will take place exclusively online here.

Women chefs take center stage at this first gala
As the place of women in the gastronomy industry is an issue that has been at the heart of the news this year, the Lauriers wanted to carve a place for talented women chefs by entrusting them with the gala meal. The meal will feature Quebec products in collaboration with several local producers’ associations. Guests will be able to enjoy dishes created by chefs Colombe St-Pierre, Émily Homsy, Emma Cardarelli, Stéphanie Audet, pastry chef Stéphanie Labelle, sommelière Véronique Dalle and several other talented women!
